Choosing a carbon steel flanges manufacturer in India starts with a clear specification. A quotation described only as “carbon steel, Class 150” leaves out the size, material grade, flange type, facing and documentation requirements. Those omissions can lead to quotations for different products.

What are carbon steel flanges?
A flange provides a connection point between a pipe and another component, such as a valve, fitting or equipment nozzle. A flanged joint brings together the flange, mating connection, gasket and bolting. Selecting the material alone does not establish whether that assembled joint is suitable for its service.
Record the fluid, design pressure, design temperature, corrosion conditions and applicable project code before comparing offers. The project's engineer should approve the material and joint design; a supplier's product name or a website table cannot replace that approval.
Material specification and dimensional standard: what is the difference?

A material specification and a dimensional standard answer different questions. Do not treat an ASTM material grade as a substitute for the flange's dimensional designation. Read the official ASTM A105 scope and ASTM A350 scope when identifying the required material reference.
ASTM A105 versus A350 LF2: what should the buyer check?
When a project specifies A350 LF2, preserve the full grade and class on the enquiry, quotation, purchase order and material records. Do not accept a substitution described only as “equivalent carbon steel.” Ask the project engineer to approve any proposed change in material or testing requirements before ordering.
For either material, compare the offered grade, heat treatment and inspection documents with the purchase specification. Where notch-toughness testing is required, request the applicable test conditions and acceptance criteria. A single temperature quoted in an article is not a universal operating limit for every flange or joint.
Flange types and the details that distinguish them

How to check pressure class and size
ASME B16.5 covers several pressure classes, with size limits that depend on the class. Its published scope lists Classes 150 through 1500 over NPS 1/2 through NPS 24, while Class 2500 extends through NPS 12. It also covers materials, tolerances, marking and joint-related requirements. Use the applicable standard's rating tables for the specified material and design temperature, alongside the project's piping requirements. Do not use the class number as a standalone pressure value or assume the same rating applies at every temperature. Confirm the complete joint selection with the responsible engineer.
What documents and inspections should you request?
Agree the inspection scope before the order is accepted. Ask which records will accompany the exact items supplied and which additional inspections must be separately arranged.
- Material grade, heat identification and traceability records required by the order.
- The specified material test certificate and the information it must contain.
- Dimensional checks against the agreed standard or approved drawing.
- Any required mechanical, impact or non-destructive tests, with their acceptance criteria.
- Third-party inspection or witness points, where included in the purchase specification.
- Marking, surface protection and packaging instructions.
Do not assume that every inspection method or certificate is included as standard. Request written confirmation of the inspection scope, document availability and any effect on the delivery schedule.
Carbon steel flange RFQ checklist
Include these details in your request for quotation:
- Flange type and quantity for each line item.
- Material specification, grade, class and required edition.
- Dimensional standard, nominal size and pressure class.
- Facing, bore, pipe schedule or matching drawing details.
- Design conditions and any project-specific requirements.
- Inspection plan and required material documents.
- Coating, marking and packaging requirements.
- Delivery location and requested delivery date.
For example, a draft enquiry can state: “Please quote the attached carbon steel flange bill of materials. Confirm the material designation, flange standard and edition, size, class, facing, bore, inspection documents, quantity, delivery destination and lead time for each item.” Add the engineer-approved specifications before sending it.
Comparing supplier quotations in India
Compare quotations against the same bill of materials. Check whether the price includes the specified documents, inspections, packing and transport. Ask suppliers to list deviations explicitly and confirm whether the offer is for available stock or a proposed manufacturing schedule.
Request item weights and packed shipment dimensions for freight planning. An approximate geometry formula is not a substitute for the offered flange's drawing or its confirmed shipping weight.
